When it comes to fitness, everyone knows the importance of being flexible, which means being able to bend and move with ease. We tend to lose that ability as we age or when we are sedentary. Today’s lifestyle of sitting at a desk all day and then going home to spend the majority of the rest of the day on the couch, doing little more than exercising the hand that holds the remote, has a lot to do with our relatively low level of fitness as a population. Perhaps that is where the term “couch potato” came from: it would be hard to find a less flexible vegetable.
According to Webster, flexible has another definition. When it is applied to people, flexible means “ready and able to change so as to adapt to different circumstances”. It is this meaning that every business on the planet should keep foremost in mind when it comes to dealing with their clients or customers. More than 40 years ago, Burger King came up with “have it your way”, which was a brilliant tag line for an industry that was known for fast and predominantly un-personal service. Whether you are old enough to have watched the original episodes or are familiar with the sitcom Cheers only through late night reruns, the one thing everyone remembers is that it was a place the patrons felt at home because “Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name.”
It is great to be able to order food the way you want it at a restaurant and to have your beverage of choice be waiting for you before you sit down at your favorite bar. As nice as that is, though, it is even better to get that kind of recognition and treatment when you go to the gym. Large, warehouse-sized gyms have their advantages. Besides the latest concoction being served at the smoothie bar, there are multiple Olympic style swimming pools, acres of machines lined up in front of flat screen TVs and trainers going from person to person keeping everyone moving. For some people, more truly does seem better.
Small gyms, on the other hand, do not even try to compete with the number of machines or the size of the pool. Their value is found in the concepts of providing personal service and being flexible – being ready and able to adapt to different peopleand their individual challenges, goals and level of conditioning. This will normally include overall goal development, customized workout routines, consistent follow-up and monitoring, as well as guidance in the areas of nutrition and weight management.
One-size-fits-all is simply not a good fit when it comes to fitness. People are different, and what works or is appropriate for one is not the same for another. People also change, and what is effective today may not be tomorrow. This is where individual attention and coaching are so valuable. Even if this wasn’t true, it makes a difference when we enjoy what we are doing rather than have to force ourselves to keep at a program in order to accomplish some goal in the future. Finding a gym where they do know your name “and they’re always glad you came” can be the difference between success and one more failed attempt.
